How I Actually Use AI to Scale Ecommerce Brands (Without Chasing Every New Tool)

"Sagan… I Feel Like I'm Falling Behind in AI."
One of my students asked me this the other day. He said: "I feel so behind. You go on YouTube, you open X — everyone's building crazy AI agents, AI workflows, AI landing pages, AI ads, AI automations. Meanwhile I'm just trying to sell my products."
A lot of founders feel exactly the same way. Every week there's another "must-have" tool. Someone claims they built a million-dollar business overnight. Someone else says their AI agent replaced five employees. It's exhausting — and most people are looking at AI completely backwards.
AI Isn't the Business. Your Business Is Still the Business.
When AI first exploded, almost every ecommerce brand I knew tried the same thing: generate 500 ad creatives, 1,000 headlines, unlimited product descriptions, hundreds of videos. The result was more content — not better content. Volume went through the roof. Performance didn't.
Meanwhile, I'd watch another founder make one really solid UGC video a day. No fancy AI. No viral workflow. Just understanding customers, copywriting, and storytelling — doing six figures a day. AI doesn't replace good marketing. It amplifies it.

Stop Looking for AI Tools. Start Looking for Bottlenecks.
People discover a shiny new platform, then invent a reason to use it. That's backwards. The only question AI should answer is: "What is slowing my business down today?"
Notice the pattern? You're solving existing problems — not creating new ones.
How We Think About AI at Viral Brands
As our agency grew, keeping up with AI became a full-time job. That's why we brought in a CTO whose primary responsibility is understanding AI workflows and helping the team work better. And even he can't keep up with every tool that launches. Nobody can. You don't win because you know every tool — you win because you know your business.
AI Should Make Good Systems Better
If your workflow already works, AI makes it faster. If your workflow is broken, AI helps you fail faster. I see brands trying to automate terrible marketing every day — no positioning, weak offers, confusing copy, bad creative — then wonder why AI didn't fix it. It can't. AI doesn't understand your customer better than you do.
AI Doesn't Replace Copywriting — It Makes Good Copywriters Faster
You still need to know what makes a good hook, what stops the scroll, how to tell a story, how to write an offer, how to explain value, and how to remove objections. Once you understand the fundamentals, AI becomes incredible.
- Take your highest-converting ad.
- Feed it into AI and explain why it worked.
- Ask for 10 new hooks, 5 new angles, 3 customer personas.
- Then matching landing page copy, email follow-ups, and SMS campaigns.
Now AI isn't guessing. It's learning from your winners.
We Use AI Across the Entire Agency (Not to Replace People)
Video editors: our editors built internal workflows that cut motion-graphics and ad-asset production time nearly in half — same quality, less manual work.
Operations: instead of bouncing between dashboards for orders, payments, tracking, and reports, we consolidated them. Less clicking, less copying, fewer mistakes.
Finance: paying out dozens or hundreds of creators and editors gets messy fast. We automated large parts of it — not because automation is exciting, but because repetitive work shouldn't stay repetitive.
How AI Helps Us Launch TikTok Shop Brands
AI isn't making the decisions. It's accelerating execution.
AI Will Never Replace Great Taste
Someone still has to decide which ad is actually good, which creator feels authentic, which hook sounds natural, and which headline makes people stop. AI doesn't have your brand instincts. You do. Spend less time chasing tools and more time becoming a better marketer.
My AI Rule for Every Ecommerce Brand
Don't ask "what's the newest AI tool?" Ask "what's wasting the most time in my business today?" Solve that. Repeat next month. Eventually your entire company becomes faster — not because you're using more AI, but because you're removing more friction.
The Future Isn't AI vs Humans — It's Humans Using AI Better
AI doesn't replace founders, creators, or marketers. It removes the boring parts so we can spend more time on better ideas, better storytelling, better strategy, and better relationships. Those things still win — and I think they always will.
Final Thoughts
The biggest mistake founders make is believing they're behind. You're probably not. You don't need twenty AI subscriptions or a complicated automation that looks impressive on social. You need a repeatable business, a clear workflow, a great offer, strong copy, good creators, and consistent content — then use AI to make every one of those a little faster. AI doesn't build great ecommerce brands. Great founders do. AI just helps them move faster.
